A day trip to Amer Fort, the way we'd do it

Amer Fort is the reason a lot of people end up near Kukas in the first place, and it's genuinely worth the trip — but there's a way to do it that avoids the worst of the crowds and the midday heat.

Go early

The fort opens at 8 AM, and the difference between arriving then versus at 11 AM is enormous — fewer tour groups, softer light for photos, and the sandstone hasn't started radiating heat back at you yet. We usually tell guests to leave the farm by 7:30.

Skip the elephant queue, take the jeep

Elephant rides up to the fort look romantic in photos, but the queue can eat an hour of your morning, and it's had its share of animal-welfare criticism in recent years. A jeep up the hill takes ten minutes and gets you to the same gate.

Don't rush the mirror palace

Sheesh Mahal (the mirror palace) is easy to walk past quickly, but it rewards a few extra minutes — bring a phone flashlight and see what happens to the walls in a dark corner.

Where to eat on the way back

We usually point guests toward a small thali place on the way down from Amer rather than the tourist-facing restaurants right at the fort entrance — ask our caretaker family when you're here, they'll point you the right way.

Back at the farm by afternoon

Most of our guests are back at the pool by 1 PM, fort visited, crowds avoided, with the whole afternoon left for doing absolutely nothing. That's usually the better half of the day anyway.
