Christmas and New Year near Jaipur: a quieter way to end the year

Christmas and New Year near Jaipur: a quieter way to end the year

The calendar is kind this year. Christmas Day is Friday, 25 December, and New Year's Day is Friday, 1 January 2027. That gives you two long weekends in a row, and for a lot of families it means the whole week in between is up for grabs.

It's also the week Jaipur is at its busiest. The weather is at its best, the city is full, and on New Year's Eve the parties in town are loud and packed. If that's what you're after, Jaipur does it well. If you'd rather end the year with your own people around a fire, this is how we'd do it.

Christmas weekend: slow, and mostly outdoors

Late December is the heart of winter in Kukas. Mornings are cold and hazy over the Aravallis, then the sun comes through and the afternoons are bright and mild. It's the best weather of the year for long lunches on the lawn.

Our suggestion for Christmas weekend is simple: arrive on Thursday the 24th, bring the cake and the presents from the city, and spend most of Friday not going anywhere. The farm is yours for the whole stay. That's four bedrooms, the lawn and the gardens, with room for the whole family and nobody else's tables around you.

One morning at Amer

If you do want an outing, Amer Fort is ten minutes away. Winter is the easiest time to see it, with no midday heat to plan around. The trick in holiday week is to get there early, before the tour buses arrive. Leave the farm by 7:30, walk the ramparts while it's quiet, and you'll be back for lunch.

New Year's Eve by the fire

This is the night winter at the farm was made for. We keep a fire pit going on the patio, the sky out here is properly dark, and on a clear night the stars are out in full. Bring a jacket, some music and whatever you like to toast with, and count down outdoors. There's no traffic to sit through at midnight and no long drive home after.

New Year's Day is for doing nothing at all: a late breakfast in the sun, a walk around the garden, and an afternoon nap.

A few practical notes

  • Book early. The nights from Christmas through New Year go first, and they're among our busiest of the year.
  • Stay three nights or more. Over a holiday weekend, one night is mostly spent arriving and leaving. With three nights, it starts to feel like a holiday.
  • Pack warm layers. Days are pleasant, but nights in late December get properly cold.
  • Shop in the city before you come. Pick up cake, sweets and anything special for the evening in Jaipur on your way in.
